SESCO® is the registered service mark for consulting services in commercial HVAC systems, performance testing, and verification by Supermarket Environment Services Co.
SESCO DesignSM is the service mark for supermarket HVAC systems engineering design services.
SESCO DesignSM Control Strategy (U.S. Patent No. 6,755,035) is a key element used to minimize energy consumption in standard setting SESCO DesignSM HVAC Systems |
SESCO DesignSM
The SESCO DesignSM is based on using proven applied engineering and proprietary techniques to separately treat the sensible and latent loads in the main occupiable areas of the supermarket. The SESCO DesignSM provides environmental comfort and air quality conducive to the customer’s shopping experience while supporting the necessary design conditions for optimal refrigeration performance. The bottom line result of the SESCO DesignSM is significantly reduced operating costs associated with energy and maintenance.
The SESCO DesignSM utilizes a dual path HVAC system with dedicated outdoor air and recirculation air conditioning equipment combined with the patented SESCO DesignSM control strategy.
The goal of the SESCO DesignSM is to provide HVAC and energy management systems with competitive first cost and best-in-class reduced operating cost.
The SESCO DesignSM starts with recognition of the dynamic relationship between supermarket HVAC and refrigeration systems. Open and closed refrigeration equipment operating inside the supermarket environment present unique challenges to the HVAC designer. Refrigeration performance depends in part on the indoor air conditions of the supermarket environment. Indoor air conditions depend on outdoor air conditions without some kind of an energy consuming mechanical advantage. Outside air is required to be mixed with indoor air to meet building code requirements and maintain a suitable refreshed indoor environment. The combination of indoor and outdoor air requires air handling and treatment to maintain the constant set of indoor conditions needed for optimum refrigeration system performance under varying outside ambient air conditions. Applying the SESCO dual path model with the SESCO DesignSM control strategy provides the indoor environment needed in a supermarket while minimizing the need for more mechanical work.
The SESCO DesignSM control strategy is a patented makeup air control system design that utilizes outdoor air sensors output in an ASHRAE algorithm to calculate an iterative outdoor wetbulb value for comparison to pre-established setpoints for the purpose of controlling unequal stages of compressors to match horsepower to load at any given time or season.

SESCO DesignSM control strategy Promotes Effective Energy Management
The SESCO DesignSM control strategy helps avoid energy load peaks expected from conventional control strategies resulting in a more comfortable and stable environment without the excessive and unnecessary motor starts typical of reactive designs. Supermarket Energy Managers have used the characteristic reduced peak power consumption provided by the SESCO DesignSM control strategy as an important and effective element in their total load management programs. Peak reduction and peak avoidance can help supermarket owners negotiate more favorable energy rate structures and better manage their total load.
