ENERGY RECOVERY APPLICATION W/FUME EXHAUST

BACK TO CASE STUDIES

Customer has two (2) welding fume exhaust airstreams. The airstreams are approximately 38,000 cfm and 48,000 cfm. The cost to condition the make-up air was enormous; so energy recovery was looked at. TRS has the ability to provide systems that “scrub” the welding fume exhaust and discharge back into the building, all with OSHA approval. This customer; however, wanted to utilize two dust collectors that he already owned at another facility. TRS’ innovative solution was to use an energy recovery wheel to take advantage of the conditioned exhaust air.

The challenge was to have the wheels operate efficiently without becoming clogged or contaminated with the contaminates in the exhaust airstream. The solution was to provide special cartridges for the collectors to handle the welding fumes while providing an energy recovery wheel with a honeycomb profile for industrial use (large honeycomb openings to resist clogging).

Each exhaust airstream would first be filtered by the dust collectors, run through an energy recovery wheel and exhausted through a stack. The fresh air is taken in through a louver, pre-filtered, run through the energy recovery wheel and discharged in to the plant.

In the summer the cool, dehumidified exhaust air stream transfers energy to the fresh air stream. The fresh air is cooled and dehumidified by the wheel. In the winter the heated air that is exhausted is used to pre-heat the fresh air while adding some humidity.

During the summer months, this application saves the customer approximately 77 tons worth of cooling and a significant amount of energy in the winter due to not having to heat the airstream. Any additional conditioning of the air is accomplished by the existing HVAC systems.
